During your next job interview, you may be asked what your biggest weakness is. Make sure you are not passed up for the role for being too honest or lose credibility for not being honest enough.

Why Interviewers Ask About Your Biggest Weakness

They want to determine whether you are authentic and self-aware enough to recognize your flaws and self-motivated enough to fix them. Interviewers want to know what your biggest gaps are in professional development and how you deal with professional adversity. They want to hear you demonstrate character traits essential to high job performance to help determine whether you are a good fit for the role.

How to Properly Discuss Your Biggest Weakness

Be honest, sincere and unique when discussing your biggest weakness and what you are doing to overcome it. Tailor your answer to the company and position you are interviewing for to present yourself as a top candidate. For example, if you are a perfectionist, say something like, “I tend to get caught up in the details and lose sight of the bigger picture.” Give an example of what you mean and how you are working on solving the issue., “I break down projects into mini-tasks with deadlines for each. If I spend too much time on one task, I save it for later and move onto the next. When I come back to the previous task, I can be more objective about whether it still requires work.” If you have workaholic tendencies, you could say, “I need to improve at knowing the difference between working hard and being productive. Long hours at the office do not always mean I am getting a lot done.” Follow up with, “I am learning to work smarter, not longer. I respond to emails in groups to avoid wasting hours going through my inbox. I write down five daily goals to stay focused on my priorities. The changes have helped me accomplish more high-quality work in fewer hours.”
